Mandala, the Sanskrit word for circle, is a visual image composed of a sacred circle within a square.   Mandalas have been used for centuries as meditational tools that when quietly contemplated, leads one into deep prayer, mystical healing and sacred insight.  This practice of mandala "gazing" can help us discover, and illuminate our spiritual path.

Autumn Circle of Healing       commissioned by Palmetto Health South Carolina Cancer Center

A collective art work created by Heidi Darr-Hope
and the courageous cancer survivors of the South Carolina Cancer Center.

Frantic moments soothed as we whisper together delicate dreams
Shinning through the darkness, the light of victory sweet.

In days gone by, women gathered in circles to piece small remnants of scrap fabric into
a unified whole, transforming these castaway bits into beautiful patchwork quilts.
Each scrap piece of fabric told a symbolic story about a specific individual and when
pieced together, these individual stories became part of a much larger picture.  They became part of a family, part of a community, a town, a state, a country.  Individual stories were shared and intermingled within the many faces of humanity.

This tradition began in Out-Patient Chemotherapy with the collaborative
Circle of Healing project.  Patients have joined hands using visual images
and words to create three distinct types of circles, each representing the three
components of a whole person -the body, the mind and the spirit.

          The body
is represented by the larger textured spheres
          The mind
is represented by the hand tooled metal.
          The spirit
is represented by personal images and objects

It is my hope that this Autumn Circle of Healing will inspire, nurture
and give strength to others who will walk down this path towards healing
